Kingdom Key is the default keychain for Sora's Keyblade. Sora first acquires the Keyblade during the Heartless invasion of Destiny Islands.
Kingdom Key is also the default keychain for Roxas and Xion's Keyblades. King Mickey wields the dark counterpart of Kingdom Key, Kingdom Key D, which he found on the Destiny Islands.
Story[edit | edit source]
Kingdom Hearts[edit | edit source]
Sora first acquires Kingdom Key during the night the Heartless invade his home, Destiny Islands. After speaking with Riku and seeing him disappear into the darkness, Sora finds himself alone the small islet with the Keyblade in hand. The Keyblade appears in his hand with the Kingdom Key keychain attached.[1]
Later, after arriving in Hollow Bastion, Riku reveals that he's the true wielder of Sora's Keyblade. Upon revealing this to Sora, Donald, and Goofy, he summons Sora's Keyblade to his own hand. Regardless of what keychain Sora had equipped, when Riku summons the Keyblade away from Sora, the blade has the Kingdom Key keychain equipped.[2] While Riku wields the Keyblade, he uses the Kingdom Key keychain. However, Sora is eventually able to win the Keyblade back, and the keychain equipped becomes whatever Sora had used before Riku took it.[3]
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories[edit | edit source]
Sora uses the Kingdom Key keychain on his Keyblade throughout his journey in Castle Oblivion, though he is able to use the powers of his previously-acquired keychains through the cards he acquires there.
While fighting Riku in Castle Oblivion, Zexion takes on a disguise to appear as Sora, through which he torments Riku with memories of the night he caused the destruction of his own home. While disguised, Zexion wields a fake Kingdom Key.[4]
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[edit | edit source]
As Sora's Nobody, Roxas wields a copy of Sora's Keyblade with the Kingdom Key keychain attached by default.
When Xion gains the Keyblade, she also uses Kingdom Key.
Kingdom Hearts II[edit | edit source]
On the first day, Roxas faces the mysterious white enemy in the Old Mansion. After unsuccessfully fighting the picture thief with the Struggle Bat, Roxas finds his weapon disappear in a flash of data and replaced with the Kingdom Key.[5]. The Keyblade disappears after Roxas defeats the dusk.[6] Afterwards, Kingdom Key reappears in Roxas's hand as he faces the Nobodies[7][8] until he faces Axel in the basement of the Old Mansion on the sixth day, when he summons Oathkeeper and Oblivion.[9] However, when facing DiZ shortly thereafter, Roxas attempts to attack him using Kingdom Key.[10].
Later, Sora summons Kingdom Key as he charges into the Battle of the 1000 Heartless.[11]
Kingdom Hearts coded[edit | edit source]
Data-Sora uses a digital version of Kingdom Key. Although Maleficent destroys it during Data-Sora's journey to Agrabah,[12] Data-Sora regains it in Hollow Bastion.[13]
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance[edit | edit source]
After falling into darkness at the hands of the Real Organization XIII, Sora's damaged heart is enveloped by Ventus's Keyblade armor, which is thereafter possessed by a Nightmare and becomes the Armored Ventus Nightmare, wielding a darkness-enveloped Kingdom Key.[14][15]
After Riku defeats the Armored Ventus Nightmare, the darkness and armor shatter, and the darkness enveloping Kingdom Key disappears along with Sora.[16] Riku uses Kingdom Key to continue and awaken Sora,[16] and later uses it to open the path out of Sora's heart once Sora has awakened.[17]
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-[edit | edit source]
As Sora, Donald, and Goofy prepare to begin their next journey in preparation to defeat Master Xehanort, Sora uses Kingdom Key to summon a gate to Olympus Coliseum.[18]
Kingdom Hearts III[edit | edit source]
Xion wields a replica Kingdom Key while fighting as a member of the Real Organization XIII[19][20]. She continues to use it later when she joins the Guardians of Light, first to fight Saïx[20], and then to face Xehanort and Kingdom Hearts.[21][22]
Other Appearances[edit | edit source]
Another Side, Another Story[edit | edit source]

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep[edit | edit source]
Towards the end of the opening video for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Key is seen among several Keyblades falling with Terra and Aqua. Later, Kingdom Key and Way to the Dawn strike the Dive to the Heart station at the bottom, shattering the glass and revealing Ventus within.

On September 16, 2016, the official Twitter account for American fast-food sandwich restaurant chain Arby's tweeted a photo of one of their chicken sandwiches with a Keyblade made of cardboard resting on top of it. The Keyblade resembles Kingdom Key in design, though it has the Arby's logo as the keychain token.

The album cover for Face My Fears features Japanese-American singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru, who wrote the album for Kingdom Hearts III, holding both Kingdom Key and Kingdom Key D in her hands.
Design[edit | edit source]

The keychain is a silver chain with a Hidden Mickey making up the token. In Kingdom Hearts, the token was made of three round, metal spheres, but later, the token is flat and appears to be made of sheen metal.
