Shadow is a Heartless that made its debut in Kingdom Hearts and has since appeared across most worlds in multiple games across the series.

While traversing the mountain's Cliff Ascent in Olympus in search of Hercules, Sora, Donald, and Goofy come to a large shrine to Zeus, where they are promptly attacked by a swarm of Heartless that includes Shadows. Battle ensues and upon defeating the Heartless, the trio continue their travels. Later, having been tasked by Hercules with searching Thebes for townspeople in danger during Hades's attack, Sora, Donald, and Goofy reach the Gardens, where they find a citizen under attack from a swarm of Heartless that includes Shadows. The trio defeat the Heartless, rescue the citizen, then continue their travels to the Big Olive, where they find two more townspeople surrounded by a swarm of Heartless that includes Shadows. Another fight and rescue ensues.
While traveling through the Dark World in search of Aqua, King Mickey and Riku arrive at the Dark Margin, where King Mickey notes Aqua's trail ends. Before they can make further plans, they are suddenly surrounded by Shadows. To the pair's horror, the Shadows group together to take on the new form of a Demon Tower and a battle begins.[1] Mickey and Riku fight and defeat the Heartless, but the Heartless reform and make a sneak attack, swallowing Riku in darkness. Alone, King Mickey defeats half the Shadows, prompting the rest to flee, spitting Riku out in the process.[2]
