KHDatabase:History

From Kingdom Hearts Database

Established in 2018, the Kingdom Hearts Database is a wiki that seeks to build the ultimate source for official news, informaiton, and media from the Kingdom Hearts series by preserving all official content from the series. This page provides a brief history of the KHDatabase, our accomplishments, and growth.

History[edit source]

Sites dedicated to covering Kingdom Hearts news and information have long existed in years past, and there had been previous attempts to combine covering news and encyclopedic content on the series.

Inspired by both existing wikis and the MediaWiki software’s capabilities as well as existing news publications in the tech space and their ability to connect with sources, KeybladeSpyMaster launched the Kingdom Hearts Database on March 5, 2018. It’s original vision was to provide up to date Kingdom Hearts news coverage that could be linked to encyclopedic articles on the topics, characters, and games being covered. Sometime later, with changes being rolled out at Fandom that would see, among other things, the end of the beloved Monobook skin, the remaining staff at the Fandom-hosted Kingdom Hearts Wiki (then called The Keyhole) migrated to the Database.

To help promote the smallest and newest Kingdom Hearts site, the Database launched a Twitter account at @KHDatabase, and began a podcast series, The Cornerstone of Light Podcast. It also reached out to other members of the Kingdom Hearts community. In April 2019, the Database affiliated with Kingdom Hearts Screencaps, a web project aiming to host frame captures of every cutscene in the Kingdom Hearts series. That summer, the Database was featured in an ad in the Kingdom Hearts issue of Level Story. That August, the Database affiliated with the renowned Kingdom Hearts music group Project Destati.

In 2020, the Database organized an anniversary stream-a-thon, the precursor to what would become the annually-hosted "March Caprice: A Celebration of Kingdom Hearts" event. The Database has been proud to join with other Kingdom Hearts fans and sites in supporting March Caprice since its inaugural event in March 2021.

To help promote the cause of independent wikis, in 2021, the Kingdom Hearts Database affiliated with the newly-created Final Fantasy Wiki. In December 2022, the Database joined the Gaming Wiki Network, becoming the thirteenth member of the organization.

On March 5, 2023, the Kingdom Hearts Database turned five years old. To mark the occassion, the Database received a new design and visual identity. It continues to strive to be reliable, complete, and welcoming for all Kingdom Hearts fans as it works towards its mission to become the ultimate source for Kingdom Hearts news, information, and media.
