  • Yoko Shimomura, long-time composer for the Kingdom Hearts series, receives the Game Developers Choice Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.


Tonight, at the 2024 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California, renowned video game composer Yoko Shimomura received the Game Developers Choice Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award honors her 36+ years of composing music in the video game industry. For Kingdom Hearts fans, Shimomura is best known for being the primary composer of the Kingdom Hearts series for its entire 22-year run so far. In fact, in an interview with IGN published earlier today, she revealed that she’s already begun development of the soundtrack for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV!

In addition to the Kingdom Hearts series, Shimomura has composed for a variety of games for Square Enix and Capcom. Her video game music career began in 1988 with Capcom’s Samurai Sword, and since then, she’s composed for titles such as Final Fight, Street Fighter II, Live A Live, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy XV, and Streets of Rage 4.
