Sora is a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, based on his appearance in Kingdom Hearts. He was announced on October 5, 2021, as the final downloadable character for the game. Sora is a part of Challenger Pack 11, which released on October 18, 2021.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Sora's controls are relatively easy to master by comparison to previous DLC fighters. Meaning everyone should be able to enjoy playing as him. However, Sora has a more distinctive playstyle. He excels in airborne fighting, true to his name. His midair jump is really high, and his recovery distance reaches far. He's quite floaty, making his movements light and soft. His biggest weakness is his weight, lighter than Isabelle or Young Link, which means he is easily launched.

Sora's attacks are derived from Kingdom Hearts, though much faster than in the original game. While his attacks might be a bit slow in comparison to other characters, the timing window for the attacks is longer, making it easier to overwhelm opponents.

Development and Design[edit | edit source]

Sora's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is heavily inspired by his appearance throughout the Kingdom Hearts series. His main costume is based on his attire from the original Kingdom Hearts, and is composed of his red jumpsuit, black and white vest, and yellow shoes. He also has seven alternative costumes. One costume is based on Sora's attire from Kingdom Hearts II, one is based on his attire from Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, one is based on his attire Kingdom Hearts III, one is based on his Valor Form attire from Kingdom Hearts II, one is based on his Wisdom Form attire from the same game, one is based on his Ultimate Form attire from Kingdom Hearts III, and the last one is based on his attire from Timeless River from Kingdom Hearts II. Each of the costumes is faithful to the original appearance, with the Timeless River costume replacing Sora's face and facial expressions as well with those from Sora's appearance in Timeless River.

Sora fights with the Kingdom Key Keyblade. The Keyblade's appearance is identical to the Keyblade's appearance in the Kingdom Hearts series.

Sometime after the release of Super Smash Bros. 4, the game's development team published a voting ballot on the game's official website, called the "Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot", in which fans could submit requests for characters they wanted to see included in that game. Series director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Sora was the most requested fighter from the ballot.

Unlocking[edit | edit source]

Sora is a part of Challenger Pack 11 as downloadable content. Once he is downloaded, he is part of the default roster, and can be played as immediately.

Due to his status as downloadable content, Sora does not have a legitimate role in World of Light. Instead, he is unlocked for use in the mode after freeing 10 fighters from Galeem's control. If loading an existing save file that meets this condition prior to downloading Sora, he is immediately unlocked.

Spirits[edit | edit source]

Sora's default fighter spirit, based on his appearance in Kingdom Hearts, is obtained by completing Classic Mode. After Sora has been downloaded, it is also available periodically for purchase in the shop for 300 Gold. Unlocking Sora in World of Light allows the player to preview the first spirit below in the Spirit List under the name "???". As a fighter spirit, it cannot be used in Spirit Battles and is purely aesthetic. His Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts III, and Timeless River outfits have fighter spirits of their own, available through the shop. Each fighter spirit has an alternate version that replaces them with their artwork in Ultimate.
