"Gambit" is the opening cutscene of Kingdom Hearts III.

Story[edit | edit source]

In an unknown city, two boys are playing a board game while discussing the legend of the Keyblade War. While one, the Boy in White, considers it ridiculous that anyone would want to start a war in the first place, the other boy, the Boy in Black, wonders what those who started the war aimed to do. He notes that the future has already been set in stone because of the foresight abilities granted by the Gazing Eye, recalling a prophecy that darkness would prevail in the Keyblade War, while the Boy in White insists there is more to the light than it seems. The board game seemingly ends in a tie, with both boys' pieces unable to move forward.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

The camera flies around a beautiful white city, showcasing it from every angle before zooming in through a closed window at the top of a tower. The screen flashes white and then fades in on the inside of the tower, panning from the top of the tall window to its sill, where two boys sit playing a board game.

"Unnamed track" (BGM_bt052_cut) begins to play.

Boy in Black: "Have you heard of the ancient Keyblade War?"

Boy in White: "Huh? Of course I have."

Cut to a close-up of the board game. The Boy in Black defeats one of the white game pieces.

Boy in Black: "Long ago, Keyblade wielders waged a war over the ownership of light."

The Boy in White defeats the game piece the Boy in Black had just moved.

Boy in White: "Yeah, the Master's favorite story."

Change to a view from behind the Boy in White. Both boys move pieces, but the game is not in view.

Boy in Black: "I wonder what they planned on doing with Kingdom Hearts after...making it appear."

Boy in White: "Who knows? I don't get why anyone would initiate a war."

Cut to a close-up on the lower half of the Boy in Black's face.

Boy in Black: "So...you know the "Lost Masters"?"

Change to a view from behind the Boy in Black, with the board visible. The Boy in White picks up one of his pieces.

Boy in White: "Who?"

Boy in Black: "They're the ones who started the Keyblade War."

Cut to a close-up on the lower half of the Boy in White's face. He puts his piece back on the board, but the board is not visible so his placement is unseen.

Boy in White: "Never heard of 'em. Where'd you hear about that?"

Cut to a view of the Boy in Black's torso. His hands are visible, but only the tops of the game pieces are in view. He picks up one of his pieces and defeats one of the Boy in White's.

Boy in Black: "Or...they're the ones for whom the war started."

Return to the close-up of the board game. The Boy in White moves one piece, then the Boy in Black defeats it.

Boy in White: "I'm not following you."

Boy in Black: "You can drop the facade."

Boy in White: "Facade?"

The view cuts to across the room, from behind a spinning circular sculpture. The Boy in White moves a piece.

Boy in Black: ""On that land shall darkness prevail and light expire.""

Return to the Boy in Black's torso. He moves a piece.

Boy in Black: "A prospective Keyblade Master should know this."

Boy in White: "If you say so."

The view shifts to behind the Boy in Black's head as he turns to look up at a wall across the room where a Keyblade is mounted on an ornate sculpture.

Boy in Black: "The Gazing Eye sees the fate of the World. The future—it's already been written."

Return to the close-up of the board game. The Boy in White picks up one of his pieces.

Boy in White: "Really? I'm not so sure about that."

Switch to a view from over the Boy in White's shoulder. The board is visible as he defeats one of the black pieces.

Boy in White: "Besides, who's to say I can't change it? And maybe light will prevail."

The Boy in Black chuckles once, then picks up one of his pieces.

Boy in Black: "Pretty confident."

Return to the close-up of the board game. The Boy in Black defeats a white game piece.

Boy in Black: "But things aren't in your favor."

The Boy in White swiftly defeats the last piece the Boy in Black moved.

Boy in White: "Perhaps. But unlike darkness, there is more to light than meets the eye."

The camera centers the head of the Boy in White as he looks up, showing us his face in full for the first time.

Boy in White: "You might be surprised."

The camera centers the head of the Boy in Black as he looks up, showing us his face for the first time.

Boy in Black: "Oh, I hope so."

From over the Boy in Black's shoulder, the camera pans across the board game. Cut to a close up of the center of the board, showing a black piece and a white piece facing each other in side by side squares, seemingly deadlocked. The screen fades to black.
