Development and Release[edit source]

Development for the series began sometime after the release of Kingdom Hearts III. Reports that Disney had greenlit a series for Disney+ based on the Kingdom Hearts series began to circulate on May 26, 2020, when multiple reporters in the Disney and general media scenes reported that a CG-animated series was in the works.[2]

Information about the upcoming series was leaked on the internet on March 30, 2022. According to the leaks, the series is set to be CG-animated and developed in the Unreal Engine. A team at Square Enix is animating the series,[3] while the story is being written by Tomoco Kanemaki, known for writing the novel adaptation of the series, and series director Tetsuya Nomura.[4] The first season is based on the events of the first game.[5] Square Enix is set to announce the upcoming Disney+ series during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event on April 10, 2022 in Tokyo, Japan. It will release sometime in September 2022 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the North American release of the first game.[6]
